Return to the home page  Equipment

At all distances, we shoot prone (lying down). The rifle must be supported by the shooter with only the elbows resting on the ground. Note also the mat for the outdoor range in the summer and the telescope to view the results.

Expensive equipment is not needed to start with. An outline of the equipment we use is shown below. The club has some equipment including rifles for members to use while they decide if smallbore shooting is for them.

A stiffened canvass or leather coat with padded elbows gives support for the upper body.

The most common rifles used are miniature bolt action rifles made in Germany by Anschutz. The rifles are all "single shot". They have no magazines and each round must be placed by hand before closing the bolt.

As the rifles are only used to shoot lead bullets, they last a long time. Current members use rifles which are anywhere between 2 and 55 years old.

The rifles fire a .22 calibre rimfire cartridge at a velocity just below the speed of sound. This kind of ammunition is very accurate and also very low cost.
